Recommendations to survive an active shooter event

In light of recent mass shooting tragedies, we want to offer some tips as to what to do in case you find yourself in a situation where you are faced with a gunman on a shooting spree. If you take nothing else from this post, please remember these three words: RUN, HIDE, FIGHT.

• RUN – In the unfortunate event that an active shooter enters an area where you are, run. Get out as fast as you can. Help others escape, if possible. Once you are out, don’t forget to call 9-1-1 immediately.

• HIDE – If you cannot escape, then hide. Know the layout of your building and where the exits are located. If possible, do not remain in hallways or common areas. Find a room where you can lock and barricade the door. Silence your cell phone and remain as quiet as possible. Render aid to those who are injured, if you can.

• FIGHT – If you cannot escape and there is no place to hide, then you are left with only one option and that is to fight. Arm yourself with anything that can be used as a weapon. If you have people with you, then everyone should attack the shooter. Disarm him and take whatever measures are necessary to survive.

We want to stress to you that the odds of you being involved in a situation like this are remote. But we would rather you be prepared than simply be afraid. Once police are in the building, please understand that the officers typically don’t know yet who the shooter is. When police approach, raise your hands. If you happen to be armed, lay down your weapon. You should expect to be searched and possibly handcuffed until law enforcement can determine which person is the suspect.
