State insurance investigators have charged a former volunteer firefighter in Onslow County after they say he set his own vehicle on fire and tried to collect insurance.
Michael Rumfalo of Kenansville has been charged with one count of burning personal property, insurance fraud, attempting to obtain property by false pretense, and filing a false police report.
He is a former volunteer firefighter for the Hubert Fire Department, according to Onslow County officials.
The Department of Insurance says the 40-year-old man reported his vehicle stolen last October in Onslow County.
They say Rumfalo is accused of burning the vehicle, and then trying to collect insurance money from Esurance Insurance Company. Investigators say Rumfalo did not receive any funds.
The man, who used to live in Hubert, was arrested on Friday and jailed on a $15,000 bond.
